Microsoft Azure Employment Outlook

The business world is moving to the cloud. Cisco estimates that by 2021, 94% of workloads will be processed by cloud data centers, and the current Covid-19 pandemic is only accelerating the change. Organizations are focused on hiring workers who can help build out their online operations—on platforms like Microsoft Azure—and keep their organization running smoothly.

A recent IT spending survey conducted by Goldman Sachs showed that, while Amazon is still the largest of the cloud service providers, Microsoft Azure is the most popular provider and is quickly gaining market share. Organizations prefer Azure because of its flexibility, security features, and ability to scale and employers across the country are currently looking for skilled Azure workers to help build out their online operations.

From June 2019 to May 2020, there were over 2 million job postings where Microsoft Azure was a required skill. More than 400,000 of these jobs were unique, meaning the average job was posted on an average of 6 job sites in an effort to find the right candidate. In terms of education a bachelor’s degree is most desirable, with 60% of employers looking for candidates with a B.A, with 13% requiring a Master’s degree, 2% a high school diploma or GED; 2% an Associate’s Degree; and 38% did not specify a degree requirement. When it comes to experience, requirements usually include some hands-on Azure knowledge, with 29% of the posted jobs requiring 2-3 years’ experience; 23% 4-6 years’; 11% 0-1 year; 10% 7+ years; and 28% list no experience requirement.In terms of distribution, Azure hiring hotspots are currently California (59,969); Texas (41,551); New York (26,315); Washington (25,886); and Illinois (25,345).

Job postings span every career level, but the greatest demand is for Software Developers (163,540); General Computer Occupations (72,637); Network/Systems Admin (43,659); Information Security Analyst (22,469); Web Developers (18,245); and Information Systems Manager (12,829). Because cloud services are used by most organizations, hiring for Azure skills is happening in every industry with the highest number of employers in STEM, Admin/Support, Information Services, Manufacturing, and Healthcare.
